What happens now?

What we do next:-
  1. we check your site data for spelling and grammar, and check that everything looks ok in the finished site
  2. we may also make minor alterations in your text for purposes of "search engine optimisation". This is the process of tailoring a site so that the search engines give it a higher rating, and bring you more visitors. For instance, any good author would say you should avoid repeating the same words and phrases more than necessary. But on the Internet, the reverse is true. If you are selling tractors, then the word "tractors" (preferably in the plural), and related words like farming, farms, ploughs etc, should appear in the text frequently, especially near the top of a page. Some other web designers providing a cheap web site service leave this to you, or omit the matter entirely, but we do all we can to make your site search engine friendly. So don't be surprised if we amend your text in this fashion. Your visitors will hardly notice (did you care, or even notice, how many times we mention the phrase "web sites" and "websites" on our pages?), but the search engines will.
  3. however, if we think "search engine optimisation" warrants major adjustments we will email you with our recommendations and ask for your permission before making the changes.
  4. also for "search engine optimisation" purposes, we create page titles (what shows on the very top line of your browser), and "meta tags" ( don't worry if you don't know what they are). Again, many web designers leave this to you, but we see to the matter using our experience and know-how to add the best tags for you.
  5. we then register your new domain name, if you requested one.
  6. we also set up the web hosting for you with the web hosting company.
  7. when the above are completed we contact you (normally by email) to let you know the site is up and running - this will normally be in about 5 days time to allow your cheque to be processed.
  8. we also email you all the technical data you need to keep on record about the site.
What you do then:-
  1. when you hear from us, type your url (something like www.whatever.co.uk) into a web browser to see your site
  2. when you receive the technical data, note the renewal dates for the web hosting and your domain name and enter them in your diary, for two weeks before the renewal dates
  3. then file the technical document safely for future reference. It contains your id and password for the web hosting, so keep it confidential
What we do then:-
  1. we next submit your site to several of the top search engines and directories that take free submissions. But please note that it can take anything up to 8 weeks for some search engines to accept you, so don't expect to see your site appear in them immediately. Please also note that all the search engines reserve the right to refuse a submission. The ODP directory (Open Directory Project) in particular are extremely picky and refuse many sites particularly if they already have some in the same field. (N.B. There are other search engines that require payment for a site to be added - that is a decision for you to make in the future, but some of the free ones are also the best. Google is the top search engine, and the ODP is the top directory, and both are free.)
  2. note that we will never ask you for your password. Do not divulge it to anyone, even if they claim to be us.
At renewal time:-

Each year it is imperative that both your domain names and site hosting are renewed. Although we endeavour to remind you, you are ultimately responsible for sending us the renewal premium, each year, to cover the hosting and the domain name at least two weeks before renewal is due, whether or not you receive our reminder.

Note that the hosting company we use - as do most hosting companies - require payment  before the renewal date or they may take the site off air until payment is received! With the domain names it is even more critical, as restoring a site after late renewal of a domain name can sometimes take weeks, even months (during which time your site is off-line), as the matter has to go through other parties that neither us nor the hosting company have any control over. A name can even be lost entirely in this way.

  1. we will email you annually, one month in advance pf the due date of your renewal, so keep us informed if you change your email address. Payment MUST be received two weeks before the due date to give us time to renew your domains and hosting. On receipt of your renewal payment we do the following:-
  2. we renew your domain names (some names are renewed annually, some every 2 years)
  3. we renew your site hosting
  4. we also survey your search engine listings. We then resubmit you to any of our standard engines that might have dropped the site during the year, and we submit you to any new engines we have added to our list. In particular we check if you were previously accepted by the ODP, the most prestigous of the directories, and if not we resubmit your site.
On-going:-

For as long as you remain with us:-

  • You will be able to make amendments or additions to your site at any time, just by coming back to our site and clicking on the Amend Site menu option. You do this free of charge, unless you have make regular or frequent changes (more than 8 per year). Amendments are normally applied to your site the next working day.
  • We also monitor the hosting company to check for possible problems, and will try to resolve such problems with the hosting company if they arise (though we cannot guarantee an immediate result since the hosting is, naturally, out of our hands). In the unlikely event of a hosting company going out of business without making alternative provision for the sites it hosts, we will endeavour to make alternative arrangements for you. Please note that while most web hosts can normally keep their systems running in excess of 99% of the time, this is not guaranteed and local events can sometimes affect this. Please note that we will not take any action over problems which are general to the Internet as a whole, or which are a result of catastrophic events occurring in the UK or elsewhere which affect many web hosts or web sites.
  • If you move to another web designer in the future, they will need to know the details in your technical details document, so keep it safe
